Microsoft Word beginners misuse the spacebar for paragraph indents or aligning blocks of text to the center or right of a page. Use the keyboard spacebar to separate words from each other, not to alter paragraphs.
When you change fonts and font sizes of a line or paragraph of text, remember that spaces are characters too. And the change in size may distort your text.
As an example, type one short line of text, then press the Enter key. Copy that line and paste it below the first text, twice. You should have three new lines of text.
Use the tab key on the middle line of text.
Use the keyboard spacebar to line up the first and last lines with the middle line. Then select all three lines and change the font size to 20 points. The middle line stays in position, while the other lines move out of position. Using the tab key makes sure that no matter the font family or size, text will always begin on a specific point without distorting the text.
The same problem occurs if you try to center a paragraph with spaces from the keyboard spacebar. Center a paragraph through the Format menu and Paragraph command, choosing the General section and center alignment.
