Confused about these look-a-like punctuation marks?

For the first-time computer user, some keys of a computer keyboard appear to be the same character in a different location. The characters I am talking about are the apostrophe, single-quote, and accent grave mark.

Apostrophe ( ), Single-Quote ( ), Accent Grave ( ` ) look-a-likes

The apostrophe and single-quote keys look similar to each other at first glance, until you take a closer look at their screen characters.

The apostrophe does not have its own key. It is found in the Insert menu, within the Symbol dialog box. A closer look compared to a single-quote shows the apostrophe appears to ‘stand straight-up‘. Users can substitute the single-quote as an acceptable substitute.

The single-quote differs from the apostrophe with the little curl at the top of the character.  It is two keys to the right of the lowercase letter “ L ”, and is the popular substitute for the apostrophe character.

The accent grave mark is the first character before the number “ 1 “ on the keyboard. When used as a substitute for an apostrophe, its “lean” to the left lends itself as an foreign accent marker instead of an apostrophe.
