People using Microsoft Word for the first time, want to know what are the red and green wavy lines under some words in a document and how to remove them.
Red Wavy Lines
In most cases, these are words that have been typed in error and need to be corrected by the user with Spell Check or by the user proofreading each word.
In other cases, it may be a correctly spelled word that is not recognized by the built-in dictionary, such as the name of a city, a persons’ name, or industry-related terminology. In those cases, you can easily add those words to the dictionary, or skip them if you know that those words need not be added to the dictionary.
Green Wavy Lines
Your grammar teacher knew the difference between an active or passive voice, or a fragment sentence and a weak clause. Microsoft Word uses the green wavy lines to direct your attention to rewriting sentences that may need to be rephrased or organized. If you are creating a screenplay or movie script where grammar is not an issue, you can ignore the green lines word-by-word as they appear or are created.
If the grammar and spelling lines are an annoyance as you type, you can turn these features off in the Tools – Option dialog box. Click the Tools menu, select the Options command, then uncheck “Check spelling as you type” in the Spelling section, and “Check grammar as you type” in the Grammar section.
