Need special characters that are not displayed on the keyboard? Don’t forget about Symbols.

Insert > Symbol > Symbols tab.

The Symbol dialog box displays two tab sheets labeled as Symbols and Special Characters.

In the Font: drop-down menu, take a look at the fonts named Symbol, Webdings, Wingdings, Wingdings2, and Wingdings3. Use the right-side scroll bar to view the available symbols of that font.

Below that window is a row of Recently used symbols: that displays the 16 most recently chosen symbols. Under that row you will see the description of the character selected, a Character code box and a drop-down menu labeled from:.

As an example, to type 75° degrees, type  75  then click Insert > Symbol > Symbols tab. From the Font drop-down menu, select the Symbol font. The degree symbol has a code value of  00B0. Type this code into the Character code: box.  The degree symbol will appear. Click the Insert button on the bottom-right corner of the dialog box. Viola!

Math teachers ask me how to type the “plus sign” on top of the “minus sign” to represent the expression “plus or minus”,  describing a margin of error or tolerance. Easy! Put the cursor in front of the number that will show the “plus or minus” symbol. Click Insert > Symbol > Symbols tab. From the Font drop-down menu, select the Symbol font. The “plus or minus” symbol has a code value of  00B1. Type this code into the Character code box.  The “plus or minus” symbol appears. Click the Insert button on the bottom-right corner of the dialog box, and the “plus or minus” symbol appears in front of the number selected. Try out the rest of the symbols listed in Table 1, and see if you can find interesting symbols to use in the future .
