Your decided to use #MicrosoftWord 2007 for the first time. You open the document, type your information then save the document. So far, so good. Then you put the file on a flash drive, take it home and open it with your computer. And nothing happens. Error messages appear saying that the file format is not recognized. It’s as if your computer doesn’t know the data is on your flash drive. And you know what? It doesn’t! Here’s why.

Microsoft Office Word 2007, referred to as Word 2007 from this point forward, introduced the new Open XML format for the Microsoft Office 2007 software suite. In short, #MSWord 2007 will read documents created from #MicrosoftWord 2003, #MSWord 2003 cannot read #MSWord 2007 documents. So what do you do if you use one PC with #MSWord 2003 and another with #MSWord 2007.?

In the Save As dialog box, there is the Save as type: drop-down menu. The default file format for  a #MicrosoftWord 2007 document is Word Document (*.docx). You will also see the choice Word 97‑2003 Document (*.doc) which will allow you to save and read the document from #MicrosoftWord 2003. So your decision may be based on how often you will use one version over another, and wheather to update both computers to one version of #MicrosoftWord.

Hope this helped you!
