When I started using word processing software several years ago, I found it necessary to include page numbers in a header or footer as a way of helping me keep track of pages that seemed to float all over my desk. Inserting page numbers in a header or footer was a ‘piece of cake’ as follows:

The Header & Footer group contains the Header and Footer buttons with pre-set page numbers inside a header or footer.
You may also insert a page number anywhere you want in a header/footer by using:
- the field names within the Quick Parts button of the Text Group within the Insert tab
or
- the Page Number button in the Header & Footer group within the Insert tab
Several months ago, I published a Microsoft Word tutorial and did not want a long beginning-to-end sequence of page numbers. Each chapter was to be introduced with a title page and no page number. The pages following a chapter title page would display page numbers at the bottom of each page. But there was a problem. If I chose to insert a page number in page 4 of a 7 page document, pages 1 through 3 also displayed the page number as well. After several minutes of debating whether to include or not include page numbers, I decided to have chapter title pages without page numbers, and the pages that followed a title page would display page numbers, through the use of Section Breaks.
