Many new users think the mouse pointer and the blinking cursor are the same. They are not.

Mouse Pointer

The mouse pointer resembles an I-beam when placed within a line or paragraph of text. It turns into an arrow when moved outside of text, or pointing to one of the Microsoft Word toolbars.

Blinking Cursor

The blinking cursor, also known as the insertion point, indicates the spot where new text can be inserted and deleted in a file, as well as the starting point to other editing and formatting.

The mouse pointer can be anywhere on the computer screen, but text is modified from the cursor in a document. The two may be at different locations on the screen, but they are not the same.
